Every social network wants to be TikTok, or at least do what TikTok does: attract a new, younger audience. It’s no surprise that app stores have been filled with clones, or that services like Instagram have focused on their own releases like Instagram Reels.

But it’s easy to forget that TikTok didn’t invent the concept. There was already an app, which had some success, that opted for short videos as a quick and easy way to connect with its audience. We are talking about Vine
Vine could return with its short videos
The idea of Vine is familiar. It was an application for sharing short videos, no longer than six seconds, which was purchased by Twitter in 2012. Many “memes” and viral videos that are shared today on Twitter and YouTube are actually were first published on Vineand many of its creators have made themselves known on other plat forms.
We now know that Vine was ahead of its time, but in 2016 it was no surprise that the service was shut down. Twitter was going through a tough time: its co-founder, Jack Dorsey, had returned to a company desperate for more growth and more revenue streams. In this context, the closure of Vine was a way to control expenses, but in perspective, if it had lasted a few more years maybe it could have attracted the same users as TikTok. It’s hard to say, and it’s also hard to say whether Vine can be successful if he returns.
Elon Musk seems ready to take a risk. The new owner of Twitter launched a poll on his account, asking his followers if they wanted Vine back; the responses were overwhelmingly positive, with 69% of the vote. The possibility that Twitter could fight TikTok with Vine is interesting to many people, to say the least, but it won’t be easy.
Bring back Vine?
— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) October 31, 2022
According to inside sources AxiosElon Musk has put a deadline on his team of developers, so that get Vine back by the end of the year; however, it should be remembered that the development of the Vineyard stopped six years ago, an eternity in the sector. Vine’s source code is unlikely to be workable as-is, and in fact would be best developed from scratch for a new platform. And that means spending more money and hiring more employees, which Musk really doesn’t want to do.
