We never tire of saying it: it’s important choose a strong password to protect our accounts and devices. It is ideal, for example, to use numbers and special characters, to prevent cybercriminals or hackers from easily accessing our data, files or accounts.
In our language we seem to have an advantage: use the letter ‘ñ’ in passwords can make them much more secure. This is how a cybersecurity expert explained it on the podcast @inedito.podcast, as can be seen in a post on TikTok. This letter can strengthen the security of our passwords, but unfortunately we cannot use it in all cases.
A better password will make your accounts more protected
There are some basic but very important recommendations for creating strong passwords: use special characters, numbers, upper and lower case letters, and something particularly important is do not repeat our passwords for various services and devices. We understand that it can be difficult to remember so many passwords, but fortunately there are password managers that can help us, or we can simply save them in a notebook or somewhere safe.
Many people still use very basic, easy-to-guess passwords, even without any technical hacking knowledge. Just a year ago, we discovered that “123456” was the most popular password in Europe, followed by others like “password”, “tequiero” and “realmadrid”. Others use a loved one’s date of birth or name, and it’s also a security risk.
However, one trick we can use to strengthen our password is to use the letter “ñ”. Security expert Hackavis assured in his podcast interview that this letter can strengthen a password:
“A password that would probably take you five hours to crack, you put the ‘ñ’ in it and it takes four weeks“.
According to the expert, using this letter makes it more difficult for a hacker to brute force a password, which helps us protect our accounts and data.
However, there are three things that we must keep in mind: the first is that including the letter “ñ” in our password does not make it impossible to violate its security, but allows it to be done harder to do. The second aspect to keep in mind is that some services and websites simply don’t allow you to use the letter “ñ” when creating a password. This is particularly true in the case of services coming from abroad, because they do not know handwriting.
Well, maybe Most important: We must remember that not only must we use a strong and secure password, but it is also advisable to configure two-step authentication in all services in which it is available, in order to better protect our accounts and our devices.
