If you have (or have had) a Netflix subscription with more people, you probably already know that for a few days it will cost you a lot more to maintain it due to the new shared account measures. After hearing the news, social media fumed and many people announced their withdrawal from the platform. Who knows if this was the trigger for the new and aggressive Netflix discount campaign which, in some cases, makes us pay half
On February 13, people in Latin America received this message:
The title was catchy. The best entertainment now has a lower monthly price“. In the current streaming wars, being the best means not only having the best content, but also having a competitive price. Without going any further, SkyShowtime has just landed in Europe with an offer which, like The Godfather, is difficult to find…to refuse: a subscription for less than 3 dollars and 100,000 hours of entertainment.
SO Netflix counterattacked with a drastic price drop… in Latin America. Although as you will see below, the discount percentage varies from country to country:
Bolivia, Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua and Paraguay
- Basic: $3.99 (was $7.99)
- Standard: $5.99 (instead of $10.99)
- Premium: $7.99 (was $13.99)
El Salvador, Dominican Republic, Honduras, Ecuador and Guatemala
- Basic: $4.99 (was $7.99)
- Standard: $7.99 (instead of $10.99)
- Premium: $10.99 (was $13.99)
Panama
- Basic: $4.99 (was $8.99)
- Standard: $8.99 (instead of $12.99)
- Bonus: $12.99 (instead of $15.99)
As you can see, there are countries like Bolivia, Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua, and Paraguay with discounts of up to 50% on their basic plan and 40% on Standard and premium plans. However, the price drop in any case is more than obvious
Can we expect the same in Europe? Although there is currently no record that Netflix sent these messages here or made an official statement, there are reasons for optimism: before applying its new measure with shared accounts, it has first tested in some of these Latin American countries to which it then applied its no account sharing policy with other European countries such as Europe and Portugal. It is therefore possible that Latin America will once again be at the forefront of a new Netflix pricing strategy.
