The company protects the rights to its content by blocking retransmission through HDMI adapters.
Very bad news for subscribers to Netflix and other streaming apps, especially those who don’t have a stable internet connection or who live on the outskirts of a major city. Netflix has stopped streaming video to TVs with HDMI adapters from iPhone and iPad.
In 2019, news broke that Netflix was no longer sending content via AirPlay and now the platform has done the same with content streamed to the TV via the HDMI port. The reason? The protection of audiovisual content with digital rights (DRM).
Streaming apps like Netflix no longer allow the use of HDMI adapters
Users on the Apple forums and Reddit have reported a serious issue with HDMI support for apps like Netflix. apparently, andUnable to send content from streaming platform to TV for digital rights reasons. When they try to stream content via HDMI, their TV screen goes black.
They even contacted Netflix tech support and reported that they had made the decision to no longer offer HDMI support.
“Just had a conversation with Netflix Support about HDMI no longer working with iOS 16. They communicated that they have made the decision to no longer offer HDMI support. For those of us who live in a remote place, and even only 19 kilometers from the city but we cannot use the Internet, it is from the telephone that I see it.”
The only solution, for the moment, is to use a external screen with iPad via USB-C.
Our opinion
We rarely decide in this type of decisions, but from iPadízate we must say that we are totally against this ban. It does not constitute any type of illegality. What about those who bought an HDMI adapter? And what about users who don’t have internet access and no other way to stream content?
Personally, I used HDMI adapters with Apple devices to play media on my TV many years ago when I bought my first iPad. I have to say it made things much easier for me and I was super happy with how it worked. Same thing happened to me with AirPlay.
Currently I only use the TV’s HDMI ports to connect Apple TV (it’s wonderful) and other types of devices. But it never hurts to have an alternative such as using HDMI adapters to mirror content onto the TV screen.
