Learn how Apple Intelligence’s new photo cleanup feature works
Yesterday was a very busy day with the release of the eighth beta of iOS 18 and the arrival of the third beta update of iOS 18.1 for iPhone. Everything seems to indicate that Apple’s software developers are working overtime to finalizing all details before the official launch of iOS 18 in September.
An update version iOS 18 Release Candidate which, by the way, will take place immediately after the celebration of Apple’s special event during which the new iPhone 16 models, three versions of the Apple Watch, AirPods 4 and, possibly, new iPad devices will be presented.
Although the new iOS 18 beta doesn’t include many significant changes compared to the seventh iOS 18 beta, The latest iOS 18.1 beta update brings one of the most exciting new features from Apple Intelligence
Clean Up: Apple Intelligence’s new tool to remove objects and people from photographs
There are many mobile applications that offer photo editing functions specifically dedicated to cleaning or erasing objects, people and other elements unwanted on photographs. Snapseed has its stain remover, Google Photos has Magic Eraser and Photoshop has the deletion tool.
With the arrival of iOS 18.1 – which we remember is still in beta phase – Now Apple also has its own artificial intelligence tool to erase objects and people from the background of the photographs to give more importance to the main subject.
The tool is called Clean Up is available in the Photos app in iOS 18.1 and uses Apple Intelligence to automatically detect objects, items, and people that can be magically erased from photos. And how it works is truly wonderful!

As you can see in the video, Apple Intelligence automatically detects all elements of a photo which may be susceptible to deletion. But in addition, the iPhone user can also mark, touch and circle other items need to be removed.
After checking out an item, Clean Up cleans the image by removing the object or person and making only the background visible of the image. Apple has done a very good job of filling in the background of images after removing unwanted elements. Although sometimes you have to repeat the process several times until you get the cleanest result.
To use Clean Up in iOS 18.1, you just need to follow a series of simple steps:
- Open Photos in iOS 18.1.
- Access a photograph.
- Press the button To modify.
- Select the tool To clean.
The new Clean button has an eraser icon. Which makes perfect sense. But that’s not the only smart photo editing tool in Photos, Apple also added a feature in iOS 16 that lets you crop a subject in a photo by automatically separating an element from the background simply by tapping and holding on an image. A perfect way to create background-free Messages stickers.
Another new feature present in the latest iOS 18 beta software update is: Notification summaries with Apple Intelligence, which have now been extended beyond the Mail and Messages apps.
Apple Intelligence is available with iOS 18.1 on iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max with iPhone settings and Siri in English. It is not yet available in the European Union or China.
