Nowadays, the quality of a processor is not determined solely by its power. It is true that this is a determining factor, especially in the higher ranges where models like the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 dominate the market at the moment.

But perhaps more important than raw power is how many new technologies and features the new chips enable. Google demonstrated this recently with the Pixel 7, which brings the new Google Tensor G2 that enables new Artificial Intelligence functions to be performed.
New MediaTek Dimension 1080
In this context, you should understand the presentation of the new MediaTek processor and why it is so important. In terms of power and efficiency, we don’t expect big improvements over its predecessor, the Dimensity 920 found in mid-range phones like the Realme 9 Pro+. That’s because it’s built on the same 6nm process and the specs are nearly identical, with six 2.0GHz Cortex-A55 cores and two new 2.6GHz Cortex-A78 cores (a difference of only 0.1 GHz per core compared to 920).
So far, nothing really remarkable. The real novelties of this processor are others, since MediaTek has been dedicated to improving compatibility with new technologies and with the latest advances in the sector.
For example, this chip is compatible with 200 MP cameras, such as those that we begin to see in the high ranges; the Motorola Edge 30 Ultra, for example, has one of those cameras, but uses Qualcomm’s latest processor, which says a lot about this MediaTek advancement. That doesn’t necessarily mean we’re going to see mid-range mobiles with 200MP cameras, but probably a manufacturer will dare; most will likely focus on the ability to use up to 4 cameras and 4K video recording in HDR.
Yes, it’s more likely that we’ll start to see more mobiles with 120hz screens thanks to this processor, compared to the 90 Hz to which the previous one was limited. Finally, this chip brings Bluetooth 5.2 and Wi-Fi 6, in addition to 5G connectivity, so mobiles that use it should be covered in this regard.
The Dimension 1080 will arrive throughout the last quarter of the year. The first smartphone to use it will be the new Redmi Note 12, set to launch this month in China; therefore, in the next few months we should start seeing them in Europe.
