Among the announcements made at Apple’s “Glowtime” event on September 9, we expect Apple to talk about AirPods. The 3rd-gen AirPods are a strong possibility for an update, as are the aging AirPods Max, but not the AirPods Pro. Reports have indicated that the AirPods Pro won’t get an upgrade until next year — the current 2nd-gen model with a USB-C case was released in September 2023, so they’re not even a year old and are likely to stay on shelves for a while. Or will they?
According to a post by Kosutami on X, active noise cancellation will improve in the AirPods Pro. Kosutami has a history of being specific in his past reporting on Apple products. However, when asked to specify when “the AirPods Pro will arrive,” Kosutami only responded with a vague “Soon.”
In March, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported that active noise cancellation will be coming to at least one non-Pro model. If Apple has made changes to its ANC implementation, the company may want to release it with both the non-Pro and Pro models at the same time. It’s also possible that the 4th-generation AirPods will have the same noise cancellation as the current AirPods Pro, while Apple improves it on the 3rd-generation AirPods Pro. Either way, we could see an update to the AirPods Pro at Glowtime.
When Apple released the 2nd-generation AirPods Pro in September 2023, the company improved the ANC, touting “2x more active noise cancellation” than the original AirPods Pro, so we don’t know how much better the new model would be.
