Until not long ago, one of the biggest unknowns in the Android ecosystem was the number of software updates our devices would receive. In January of that same year, Samsung spoke out and announced that its mobile phones, starting with the Galaxy S24 family, would enjoy seven years of Android and One UI updates, becoming, along with Google, one of the companies that offers more updates for your devices.
Now, the company will also apply this update policy to its smart TVs: Samsung will start offering seven years of operating system updates. Tizen operating system for its Smart TV range, starting with some 2023 models.
Seven years of updates for Samsung’s “AI TVs”
This new update policy achieves what is called “AI TVs” from the South Korean company, which mainly includes a handful of high-end TV models that will hit the market in 2023, and reaches the majority of models that will hit the market from 2024.
Samsung has applied a similar strategy for Samsung Galaxy phone updates: in 2022, the company announced that its high-end devices and many mid-range devices would receive 4 years of Android updates, starting with the Galaxy S22. Now in 2024 Extended software updates for up to seven yearsbut again, starting with the new generation, the Galaxy S24. Previous models will still receive four years of updates.
In the case of smart TVs, The most recent models are the ones that will receive seven years of Tizen updatesThe company hopes that more software updates and new artificial intelligence features will attract more users to its smart TV portfolio in an increasingly competitive market.
According to Yong Seok-woo, president of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics, the company “will extend the era of artificial intelligence to the home by allowing users to control devices through the TV even when it is turned off,” Business Media Korea reported.
Until recently, Smart TVs stopped receiving new features and software improvements every few years, which in the worst case meant that some users did not receive modern streaming apps, among other things (fortunately, this can be solved with a device like the Chromecast or Fire TV). Having more years of updates on our Smart TVs is an advantage for users.
