In the Netherlands alone, Apple could pay up to 50 million dollars in fines!
The controversy over payment policies in the App Store continues to generate consequences for Apple around the world. After facing a controversial lawsuit against Epic Games in the US, and warnings in Asia, now those of the bitten apple face a millionaire loss in the Netherlands.
According to 9to5mac, this would be the fifth week in a row that Dutch authorities have fined Apple. The country’s antitrust watchdog again charges the company more than $5.7 million. And the situation could continue in the absence of a proposal from Apple to comply with the judgment which forced it to offer other payment channels.
Apple paid 25 million dollars in fines in Europe
Antitrust authorities in the Netherlands accuse Apple of being “abusing a dominant market position by not allowing software app makers in the Netherlands to use alternative payment methods for dating apps accessed through their app store.”
weeks ago, Apple presented a proposal that planned to charge 27% for these transactions. However, the Consumer and Markets Authority don’t consider it “a serious proposition”:
“We have made it clear to Apple how they can comply…So far, however, they have refused to make any serious offers.”
According to Reuters, “ACM dismissed Apple’s actions as imposing an unreasonable burden on software developers and inconsistent with compliance.”
If the situation persists, the ACM will impose a fine of up to 10 weeks on Apple, in the amount of 50 million dollars. So far, the total of all coercive fines amounts to 25 million dollars.
