When it comes to going out for sports, we have plenty of apps to choose from. There are really many options that stand out on one or another point. WorkOurDoors stands out above all for its ability to display the information we need the way we want it and for the great combination of maps and metrics. Let’s analyze it.
The best combination of maps and metrics
In sports, there are many variables, disciplines, styles and, therefore, options. Given this diversity, different apps specialize in different approaches. Apps for water sports, apps for routes, apps for metrics-based training, and more. The WorkOutDoors are distinguished from others by their balance.
If we had to describe the application in one sentence, we would talk about an application with half maps and half metrics and with thousands of customization options. And that’s basically the essence of WorkOutDoors, focusing on routines that force us to see where we’re going and where we need to go. Pedro Aznar told us about it recently in his review of the Apple Watch Ultra and during his ascent to the mountain of Montserrat.
Next, we have to talk about personalization. Almost overwhelming. There are options for exactly everything. From customizing the thickness of the lines on the maps, of course, to the colors, the size of the points of interest, the menus that appear in the application and, above all, the information that we want to see.
The application asks us a multi-screen model. A main screen that shows the route and some of the metrics followed by different screens that we can customize to see, for example, our pace, the metrics related to the heart, those related to the objectives of the race, the laps we have , the intervals and their metrics, etc.
Five tabs, hundreds of options
Although we can modify many options and parameters of the Apple Watch itself, it is in the iPhone application that we will have access to all the management. In five tabs: Training, screens, routes, maps and optionswe cover everything we can do from the app.
in the tab Train us, we can see our sessions. Each offers us five sub-tabs with more information depending on the type of sport we have practiced. The pace of each section, the elevation of the terrain, the cardiac effort in each section divided into heart rate zones, the calories burned and also the accuracy of the GPS for the map and the route we had planned. All this is accompanied by a map where we see the values represented graphically.
in the tab Screens is where we can configure the different information screens depending on the sport we are going to practice. For each of them we are offered the overview, activity, calories, elevation, graphs, heart, rhythm, power, speed, steps, goal and also a personalized screen. For each of the different screens we can choose between its distribution, from one with the map at the top, to another where it only occupies a quarter of the screen or simply disappears in favor of graphics or metrics. Finally, we can choose which value or metric is displayed in each section.
The eyelash Routes allows us to import, in universal GPX format, these itineraries that interest us. We can download them from the Internet, make them ourselves with an online tool, or receive them from other people. Once in the app, they will be integrated into exercise routines to keep us on track at all times.
Maps is the section that we will use to download the cartography of the area or areas that interest us. We simply navigate the map and mark a box around the area. With the application open on our Apple Watch, the transfer is almost immediate. Let’s have peace of mind to transfer to the Apple Watch all the areas we consider. To give us an idea, the entire London metropolitan area takes up just over 1MB of storage on our watch.
Finally we find the tab Options that allow us to customize each of the aspects of the candidacy. It’s such a comprehensive tab that it deserves its own section.
Customization, customization and more customization
I have to say it. The first time I entered the WorkOutDoors options, I was pretty overwhelmed. There are many, many options. The images that accompany the article are proof of this, even if frankly they are below. Let’s quickly review everything we can do.
We have the alerts distance, time, calories, ascent, descent, pace, heart rate, speed, power, battery charge, connecting Bluetooth accessories (such as heart rate monitors, etc.), changing heart zones and even rain as we can configure for everyone and each of the training types. [Disclaimer: hemos nombrado menos de la mitad de las alertas que se ofrecen].
So we find the command section, to control playback, view the map in full screen, lock the Apple Watch in Water mode, zoom in and out, and more. We can perform different options with a press on a metric, double press, triple or quadruple press, pressing the two side buttons, sliding on the screen, pressing or turning the digital crown and more.
We found, and we’ll detail them in more detail, options for exporting workouts and routes from the app, as well as managing files. Also for set heart rate zones, to mark intervalsto configure menus, power zones, units, voice for announcements and much more.
In the Maps section we can choose between use Mapbox or Thunderforest and also configure the style of the maps both on the iPhone (for routes, training and downloads) and on the Apple Watch. Here we can choose between different colors, the thickness of the lines, their shape, the size of the points of interest, the names of places and buildings, streets. As if that were not enough, we can customize all this depending on whether we practice sports by city, forest, mountain, ski slopes, rivers and for the regions of the coast, the sea and the islands.
No matter what we are looking for in a training application, WorkOutDoors (6.99 dollars, one-time payment) will give us the necessary options. Options which, for sure, will adjust to our training objectives and which will allow us to achieve it knowing that all the information we need is on our wrist.
