OnePlus has taken a turn in its update policy by extending the period during which its devices will be kept up to date: the brand ensures that high-end mobiles will be guaranteed three years of Android updates and four years of security. Mid-range mobiles will keep two years of Android updates and three of security; with one year of Android versions for an affordable price.
Updates are one of the big stones in Android’s path, not in vain most manufacturers tend to ignore them in their long term plans. Gradually, that changed little, as with brands like Samsung. Koreans have promised four years of security updates for their devices. Manufacturers such as OPPO or Vivo have also extended their policy. And now OnePlus, which is also linked to the previous two, is joining the bandwagon.
The most expensive cell phones will be the most upgradeable
OnePlus has decided to extend the duration of guaranteed updates by posting an article in its forum with the brand’s decision. In said article, OnePlus confirms that the most important mobiles in your catalog will have up to four years of guaranteed updates; with a noticeable decrease as the quality of the phone decreases.
Giving priority to the most expensive and newer mobiles is not strange, even in OnePlus: it was they who first updated to Android 11, also those who test Android 12. With the movement, the brand gives greater guarantees, even if, incidentally, declares favoritism which surely will not appeal to the most loyal buyers, especially those who do not have the budget of a high end.
As confirmed by OnePlus itself, its update policy is as follows:
- Gama alta o OnePlus T / R. Starting with OnePlus 8, these models will get three years of Android updates (the version Google releases each year) and four years of security updates.
- Mid-range or OnePlus North. All mobiles in this category, starting with the OnePlus North, will benefit from two years of Android updates and three of security,
- Gama basica or OnePlus N. All of these phones, the OnePlus N10 and the OnePlus N100, will only receive one year of Android updates with three safeties.
- Mobile phones older than OnePlus 8 they will keep two years of Android updates and three of security. For this, it is necessary to count from the date of marketing of the phone.
Future owners of a OnePlus, as well as those who already own one, should take this policy into account: the brand has already formalized it. This is surely one of the first decisions after the merger of the teams between OnePlus and OPPO; which will keep OxygenOS as a custom layer for mobiles.
Although OxygenOS remains the layer of OnePlus, the brand yes it will integrate the software with ColorOS, the OPPO layer. OnePlus guarantees that its users will not perceive such integration as it will be established at the code level so that, depending on the brand, “efficiency is improved and the software experience is standardized across the catalog“.
