We generally identify Samsung by its products such as phones, tablets or televisions, but the Korean company goes much further. A large part of its activity lies in the manufacturing of components of all kinds, both for its devices and for third-party companies. This is where Samsung Display comes inintended, as its name indicates, for the manufacture of screens.
This branch of the Korean firm is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of OLED screens, although it does not lack competitors. One of its main competitors is the Chinese company BOE, and between the two there is a fight to win the crown in this type of components. However, as the Korean media TheElec points out, Samsung has just scored a point which can place it in an extremely advantageous position
Patent infringement that puts Samsung in an excellent position
As we explained a little above, the fight between the two Asian manufacturers is certainly fierce. BOE is putting all its efforts into becoming a benchmark in the manufacturing of OLED screens, widely used by all types of devices. This whole situation blew up when Samsung filed a lawsuit against the Chinese company. for infringement of several patents.
The subject has been in the air for several months, even if everything changed on November 15. That day, the United States International Trade Commission (or ITC) issued a preliminary finding on this patent infringement, finding that, in fact, BOE illegally used Samsung’s patent
Concretely, this American organization has determined that The Chinese giant has violated up to three Samsung Display patentswhile the American importers and wholesalers also denounced in the process are said to have violated up to four patents.
This decision, which as we explained above is preliminary for the moment, leaves Samsung in a very advantageous position. The South Korean firm provides that cell phones cannot be sold in the United States with displays from the company BOE
At this point, Samsung can’t finish claiming victory. The ITC determines that damages suffered as a result of patent infringement is not enough to justify this ban. The South Korean firm has asked this entity to re-examine this request with a view to the final decision, but to know its resolution we have no choice but to wait, at least, until next March.
