Quantum technology will begin to develop in Apple’s Mac product catalog
Apple will continue to improve the screen technology of its products throughout 2025. The iPad Pro M4 line recently introduced a tandem OLED display with two stacked panels that combine their pixels to provide greater brightness and become the best OLED display on the market.
While Apple will continue to adopt OLED technology in other models of its iPad products, they plan to incorporate the QLED technology on some Mac computers, in fact we discovered a few days ago that the MacBook Pro M4 had a QLED panel with a quantum dot layering
Ross Young reported in Display Supply Chain Consultants that QLED technology will also make its way to the next generation of displays Pro XDR Display.
Apple will adopt QLED technology in more products
Previous generations of Apple MacBook Pro computers used KSF Red Phosphorus Integral Lamination in the production of its mini-LED screens. But the generation of MacBook Pros with M4 chips replaced this technology with one quantum dot layer to deliver greater color accuracy and better performance.
Now that Apple has adopted quantum dot technology in the MacBook Pro, it will be interesting to see if they replace the KSF red phosphor film in other products. Apparently, the first of these could be the Pro Display XDR screen.
Other Apple products using KSF phosphors with advanced lighting design include the MacBook Air, iPad Air, Mac Studio Display, and more. Quantum dots likely won’t offer any potential savings over KSF phosphors, but if Apple were trying to standardize wider color gamuts across all of their products, such as Adobe RGB+P3, it might make sense for them to proceed with this change. .
Apple launched its Pro Display XDR in December 2019 alongside the Mac Pro. A 32-inch (LCD) screen with Retina 6K technology and up to 1,600 nits of brightness that offers a resolution of 6,016 x 3,384 pixels at 218 p/p. The Pro Display XDR offers a P3 wide color gamut and 10-bit depth to deliver 1.073 million colors. It includes a Thunderbolt 3 port and three USB-C ports.
But since then, the Pro Display XDR has not been updated. So maybe next year will be a good time to renew the Mac Pro screen with quantum dot technology.
As Ross Young reported, there are no specific plans for the launch of the next generation Pro Display XDR. But he believes that his arrival on the market It should be produced between the end of 2025 or the beginning of 2026.
Apple has taken a big step forward to improve the technology of its LCD screens. The transition began years ago with the development of mini-LED panels in its iPad Pro product line. It now appears that the marketing strategy is to embrace QLED and OLED panels, the technology behind the most popular TVs on the market.
