When Samsung introduced the Galaxy S24 family of smartphones, one of its most important innovations was Galaxy AI, a platform for artificial intelligence functions which debuted with the Galaxy S24 Ultra, Galaxy S24+ and Galaxy S24, but over the months they have also reached more devices, like the Galaxy S23, Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy S22, between others.
One of the most interesting and useful features of Galaxy AI is real-time call translation, which, as the name suggests, allows translate a phone call in development, to be able to easily communicate with people who speak another language via a call. Currently this feature is only available for the Samsung Phone app, but this is changing.
Call translation will reach more Android apps, one of them could be WhatsApp
How real-time call translation works is impressive: during a call, the artificial intelligence will immediately translate what the person we are talking to says, which we can see as text on the screen or hear the translation. Our interlocutor will hear what we say in their language with the voice that we have configured on our mobile.
Furthermore, It is not necessary for the other person to have a Samsung Galaxy mobile to be able to listen to the translation and communicate with us.
It is a function that can be very useful for communicating in other languages, whether for travel, for work or for any reason. Now, Won-joon Choi, executive vice president and head of mobile R&D at Samsung, says that This tool will reach more applications. According to the executive, in a press release:
Samsung will extend the power of Galaxy AI beyond Samsung’s native calling app by extending simultaneous translation to other third-party messaging apps to support voice calls. You can stay in touch with your friends or colleagues, communicating via your favorite applications in several languages.
For the moment it is not known which applications will receive these functions, but it is not risky to think that they will reach the most popular and used applications in the world to communicate: WhatsApp, Skype, Telegram, Google Meet and Line These are some examples of applications that should receive this functionality as soon as possible, which will allow us to easily communicate with other people directly in the application of our choice and not just through a traditional phone call.
Choi also talks about bringing Galaxy AI tools and all these artificial intelligence features to more of the company’s devices. Concretely, he ensures that Samsung is working on optimize the Galaxy AI experience for upcoming foldable devices of the company, that is to say for the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and the Galaxy Z Flip 6, whose launch is expected to take place between the months of July and August. It’s unclear exactly what kind of optimization these devices will have, as Galaxy AI is already available on the Galaxy Z Fold 5, Z Flip 5, Z Fold 4, and Z Flip 4, so we’ll have to wait to find out.
