WWDC is getting closer. Rumors about the Apple Reality Pro are getting stronger every day and although we’ve heard a lot about the upcoming AR glasses, some details are still not entirely clear, such as the operating system it will use. After trademarking “xrOS” earlier this year, Apple has registered through a shell company in New Zealand a word mark with the same name, hinting that the new platform will be called “xrOS”.
According to Parker Ortolani on his own Twitter, the New Zealand Intellectual Property Office confirmed the registration of the word mark “xrOS” earlier this month. The application was, as we mentioned, filed by an Apple front company. The same company had already registered the “xrOS” trademark in New Zealand in January.
As Apple loves secrecy, has several front companies which it uses to register trademarks and patents for products that have yet to be released, so they won’t be tied directly to Apple in the event of a leak.
But a word mark (as opposed to a mere mark) has its marketing stylization. In this case, the “xrOS” wordmark found on New Zealand registrations uses the San Francisco typeface created by Apple. It aligns with the logo of other Apple operating systems, such as iOS, macOS, watchOS, and tvOS.
Last year, Apple did something similar but with the trademark and the word “realityOS”. Internally, Apple had been considering (and we’ve all heard and discussed them here before) the names “realityOS” and “xrOS” for its new mixed reality platform that will run on Reality Pro and other AR/VR products at come.
Bloomberg also reported that Apple chose “xrOS” as the platform name.. The name is said to be a reference to “extended reality”, which makes sense given the whole idea of integration between AR and VR plus Tim Cook’s comments in the recent interview with GQ. Everything seems logical. Note that those of Cupertino also have trademarks such as “Reality One”, “Reality Pro” and “Reality Processor”.
ICT Tac. Only 20 days left to reveal the mystery, the names and the novelties. It’s gonna be epic.
