Since January 2023 and exceptionally, the Ministry of Transport has offered the possibility of travel for free with Renfe, whether Cercanías/Rodalies or medium distance. This was done through a quarterly payment which was extended until this moment. However, it seems that there will be no extension before 2024.
Several sources already suggest that Minister Óscar Puente himself is not in favor of renewing these subscriptions. As it stands, it would all end on December 31st. Nevertheless, You still have time to take out this subscription for the rest of the year and travel for free with Renfe.
Cercanías/Rodalies subscription conditions
There remains the possibility not only of traveling for free on Cercanías/Rodalies, but also of requesting a pass. In fact, it has been this way since last September 1 and until December 31, 2024. It can be requested even on that day, although given the minimum number of trips required, it is recommended to request it now.
- A deposit of 10 dollars must be paid which will be recovered from January 1, 2025 if the rest of the conditions of use are respected.
- You can travel with the pass until December 31.
- At least 16 trips must be made by the aforementioned December 31 so that the payment is valid and the deposit can be returned. A journey is considered complete when the transport ticket is validated at a station turnstile to enter and validated again to exit.
- You can have the subscription in physical format with a card or with a QR in the mobile application. If issued in digital form, it can be converted to a physical card at stations, but there will be no rollback and the QR will be canceled (you can’t have both).
- Fertilizer must be stored until the deposit is returned, which serves as proof in case it should be requested.
- Ways to request subscription They are carried out digitally via the Cercanias/Rodalies website or application or in stations, either at ticket counters or at Renfe machines.
How to request the Cercanías/Rodalies pass on iPhone
- Download the “Renfe Cercanías” app from the App Store.
- Open the app and log in (or register).
- Display the side menu and click “Buy Tickets”.
- Now click on ‘Buy’.
- Choose a source station and a destination station. The subscription will be used for all intermediate stations that form the core you choose.
- Select ‘Ab. Recurring’ in the price drop-down menu.
- For the subscription start date, choose September 1, 2024.
- Click “Buy”.
- Accept the conditions, enter your ID and choose the payment method you prefer to pay the 10 euro deposit.
- Click “Pay”.
Once this is done, you can find the pass in the ‘My tickets’ section of the Cercanías app.
