There has been a lot of talk about how Samsung and Apple copy each other, a controversy that resurfaces from time to time. It’s something that doesn’t really make sense to discuss anymore, but we expect the latest development Samsung is preparing to reignite the debate.
And the latest leak about One UI 7 concerns youa version of what is called the “dynamic island” (Dynamic Island) adapted for Samsung mobiles; The source of the leak is @chunvn8888, who in his X account published a brief message in which he announces that Samsung is working on both its version of Dynamic Island and its version of Live Activities.
Dynamic Island is one of the most notable new features Apple has launched in recent years. It takes advantage of the fact that the iPhone needs a large amount of screen space to house the sensors needed for FaceID, to create an “island” that displays notifications. Apps can use this space to display information, called “Live Activities,” such as sports scores or media controls, which can also be displayed on the lock screen.
Immediately after this publication, social networks were filled with Samsung accused of ‘copying Apple’; However, the reality seems to be a bit more interesting. As revealed by another regular leaker account, @UniverseIce, One UI 7 will not have a “dynamic island,” but rather an evolution of a feature that Samsung phones already had.
In fact, users who are already using One UI 6 on their devices may have already seen this “new feature”; but for now, it only works on calls. If we make a call and go to the home menu to open another app, we may have seen a green “pill” in the upper right corner, next to the time, indicating that the call is continuing.
One UI 7 doesn’t have a dynamic island
There is just an ellipse icon on the status bar to ask for explanations. In One UI 6, there was only a call display. In One UI 7, more functions have been added, such as stopwatch and recording. I think the extension of this smart function is not an imitation… pic.twitter.com/26tKlax2a2— UNIVERSE OF ICE (@UniverseIce) July 25, 2024
Samsung’s “Dynamic Island version” would actually do this: allow more applications to use this “pill” to display information and provide access to functions; for example, the voice recorder application may display access to the button to stop recording and an indicator of the duration of the recording.
This also means it wouldn’t be as bulky as Apple’s solution and wouldn’t take up as much space; something that makes sense, since Samsung doesn’t have the iPhone’s “problem” with the front-facing camera.
