The vast majority of times new technology hits smartphones, it hits the high end first and gradually seeps into the mid-range and entry-level. We have seen it with multiple cameras, high resolution sensors, OLED panels or fingerprint sensors.
It looks like one technology that will take this course is folding panels because there are rumors that Samsung is preparing a Galaxy A with this feature, moving away from the most expensive families in its catalog.
It won’t be soon
Of course, we can forget to see something like this in 2022 and surely in 2023, with models still above 1,000 dollars in most cases.
There is talk that this new model, a Galaxy A with a flexible screen, would hit the market in 2024 or 2025. That so much time remains open to the possibility not only that this terminal will end up being delayed, but even that it will ends until cancelled.
cheaper folding
Overall, it is normal that Samsung wants to bring this technology to more affordable mobiles since in the mid-range it is even more difficult to differentiate itself from Chinese manufacturers, and none have the capacity that Samsung has to offer foldable mobiles. If I could manage to get a foldable Galaxy A for around 700 dollars, it would be a turning point in the market. And no, it’s not an unthinkable price for a Galaxy A, we’ve already seen models with similar prices.
The logical thing would be a case-style mobile, like the Galaxy Z Flip, because of the focus on the less professional user who values comfort over big screens.
This would allow Samsung to increase its market share in the mid-range. Remember that it holds 74% of the folding market share in the world.
We hope that this project will eventually move forward and that the folding technology will reach many more users in the years to come.
