Complicated times are coming for Netflix. Their new ad-supported subscription model fails so badly that they have to “hide” the basic plan from most users. And it will force you to take more steps to secure your income.
[La limitación de cuentas en Netflix cambiará la manera de entender la plataforma]
This is one of the conclusions that can be drawn from the publication of the last financial results of Netflix, which was accompanied by the resignation of its CEO, Reed Hastings, after 25 years at the helm of the company.
Netflix will continue this common practice
With Hastings as the leader, Netflix became the content giant it is today; In addition to being the largest movie and series subscription service, it is also capable of producing its own original content; However, it was also Hastings who predicted that things weren’t always going to be so pretty, and he’s a year ahead with major changes to fix a drop in user numbers.
We’ve seen one such change before, the new ad-supported plan, and another is coming later in Q1: the unable to share account. It is one of the most common practices among Netflix users, to share the password so that other people can log in and watch the content without having to pay for their own account. It’s a habit that has helped Netflix grow, especially in growing markets, but now wants to nip it in the bud.
The company confirmed in the earnings release that it plans to expand its measures against shared accounts to end of first quarter 2023. Specifically, Netflix will detect if someone tries to log in with our account outside our home, and will avoid it, offering the possibility of paying more to allow access to other people.
In other words, we can continue to share the account, but this will make the monthly fee more expensive; we don’t know how much more, although it should be cheaper than buying a separate subscription.
In fact, this measure is not new and it has been tested in Latin America for a few months now, but in Europe and other countries it had not yet been announced. But we expect that to change in the coming months.
