From September to next Saturday, it has been possible to obtain Renfe Cercanías passes for free thanks to the government subsidy. As expected, this week it was confirmed that it would be extended for the first months of 2023. And even if you were already enjoying the previous one, it is necessary to request a new subscription (confirmed by Renfe itself).
The current one will cease to be in effect this Sunday, January 1, but you can already request the new bonus which will be valid from January 1 to April 30. We will tell you below what the requirements are and what process you must follow to request it from your own mobile.
Requirements and other aspects to know about Renfe subscriptions
According to what Renfe itself establishes on its website, there is various conditions depending on the subscription requestedbecause in addition to Cercanías and Rodalies, the possibility of acquiring them for medium-distance trips has also been introduced.
For the payment of Renfe Cercanías and Rodalies
- The the duration of the subscription is four months, being valid from the following January 1, 2023 and until April 30 of the same year. However, it can be requested now and at any time during these four months.
- There is a deposit of 10 dollars conditional on the use of the subscription, establishing that a minimum of 16 trips must be made during these four months. From May 1, refunds will begin to be issued to the credit or debit cards used for payment if this requirement is met.
- You can have the subscription in a QR code, on a physical card or in both formats. If you register from your mobile you will get the QR, while at Cercanías stations you can get a card by presenting this QR or asking for the voucher for the first time.
- Must be keep the QR code and/or the card associated with the subscription so that, if Renfe so requires, the deposit can be presented and collected.
- In addition to the Renfe mobile application, there are other methods to request the subscription. For example, through the Renfe website or at Cercanías stationsbeing able in the latter to make the payment of the deposit in cash.
For the Media Distancia subscription
- The the duration of the subscription will be four months, from January 1, 2023 to April 30 of the same year. Of course, you can apply now and at any time during these four months.
- Two stations must be chosen when applying. However, the pass includes all commuter routes that interfere with the intermediate stations, so you can choose stations that are each at one end of the province and still be able to use the pass between the intermediate stations.
- There is a deposit of 20 dollars condition of making at least 16 trips. Therefore, it is necessary to introduce a credit or debit card. From May 1, 2023, refunds will begin to be made for those who have made 16 or more journeys using the pass.
- The pass is also valid for Avant mid-distance journeys between Madrid-Salamanca, Ourense-A Coruña and Murcia-Alicanteas these routes continue to maintain free rail services.
- It is not allowed to make two journeys in the same direction until the triple time has elapsed travel. Using an example similar to the one Renfe itself sets out; If you formalize an 8 a.m. journey from Madrid’s Atocha station, you won’t be able to formalize it again until 11 a.m.
- One of those considered misuse of fertilizers is to travel three times without canceling the trip 2 hours in advance. It is also forbidden to travel with someone else’s season ticket. There are also two misuse notices, while the third time the subscription can be withdrawn.
- The same trip can only be done four times a day. For example, round trip from Madrid to Ciudad Real in the morning (2 trips) and round trip from Madrid to Ciudad Real in the afternoon (2 other trips). This is done to prevent cheating and to meet the minimum of 16 trips required for the deposit to be returned.
- There are other ways to request the passes through the Renfe website or at a station, being able in the latter to make the payment in cash and completing a document with which to obtain reimbursement if at least 16 journeys are made during the four months of validity.
Steps to request subscriptions from your mobile
Again, as in the previous case, the procedure is different depending on the subscription you are going to take out. and although the process is similar in both cases it is not exactly the same thing and different applications are used.
Request the Cercanías and Rodalies subscription
first say that you must have the Renfe Cercanías app installed, which you can download from Google Play. This is the easiest way to do it. Despite the possibility of doing it through the web, the truth is that in the end this method is more oriented to do it with a computer.
Once you’ve installed the app and chosen your province, you need to follow these steps:
- Open the application menu by tapping on the icon that appears in the upper left corner.
- Click on to buy tickets and when the dropdown opens, click Compare.
- Select an origin station and a destination station. Don’t forget it’s the core of these stations will be included in the subscription.
- In the drop-down menu of select rate you have to choose A B. Recurring.
- On the start date, you must choose January 1, 2023.
- Click on Compare.
- If you were not logged in with your Renfe account, you will be prompted to do so here.
- Accept the special conditions of the subscription, enter your identity document and choose your method of payment with their respective data.
- Finally click on To pay.
Once done, the screen will appear. QR code associated with the subscription and you can start using it from this Sunday, January 1st. In the same way, as we mentioned before, you can request the physical card associated with this subscription at a Renfe point of sale.
It must also be said You will receive a receipt of the purchase in your email associated with the Renfe account. Although the QR and/or physical card should suffice, it would be convenient for you to deposit or have said email handy until the deposit is returned.
Request the Media Distancia subscription
In this case You can link the subscription to the Renfe app, but not buy it from it. To do this, it will be necessary to do it through the web with the browser, although it is not a complex process. We’ll cover both parts of the process below so that once you have it, you can always take it with you in the app.
- Access the website for purchasing recurring media remote passes.
- Fill in all the information related to the subscription, choosing the most common origin and destination stations and the type of seat, which will always be tourist.
- Go to topic Passenger data and enter there all the personal data requested, including the e-mail. The latter is not compulsory, but it will be useful for you to receive an acknowledgment of receipt in your e-mail.
- Choose the payment method, accept the conditions and complete the purchase.
- Once you have formalized the purchase with the payment of the deposit, you will see a QR code and the subscription number, which you must register since they will be important in the future and especially in these next steps.
- Now open the Renfe app, which you can download from Google Play.
- Once you open it and log in, go to the section My trips and select My subscriptions.
- In this section, press Associate a purchased subscription without using your user.
- Enter the subscription number you got before or scan its QR with the camera.
- Also enter your username and finally click on Associated.
Once you have done this, you will not only have the Media Distancia pass, but you will also have the pass in the Renfe app. In the same way as for the Cercanías/Rodalies, you can also get a physical card in the main Renfe points of sale on simple presentation of the QR or identifier of this digital subscription.
