The other day I was checking subscription accounts and, between iCloud, Netflix, Spotify… We spend a fortune a month, right? One way to save might be to grab the Apple One bundle, but I've also been looking for free cloud apps. We know that Apple only offers 5 GB free on iCloud and, suddenly, I came across a service that gives 1 TB completely free. What's behind all this? The app is called TeraBox And be careful, because it is one of the most downloaded productivity apps. Very close to Excel or Microsoft Copilot.
What is TeraBox?
When something offers so much for so little (or really nothing), I always like to research where the company comes from and how they actually make money. In this regard, the company has based in Japan and TeraBox currently hosts 320 million users registered and 20 million active users. All this on a daily basis. What is very interesting is that it is compatible with all operating systems: iPhone, Android, Mac and Windows. Then let's see what the positive points are. You already know that when something is free, the product is usually you.
If we look at the app permissions, there is nothing out of the ordinary. At least everything in the App Store is in order. The hosting and encryption of downloaded files remains a little more uncertain, although analyzing its limitations in the free version it seems that Your business model is not about working with this informationbut to convince you to pay for the premium version.
What's in exchange for having 1TB free in the cloud
The first thing you realize is that the app contains advertisements. Upon entering, we will have 15 seconds of advertising. Of course, while browsing the app, I didn't encounter such invasive advertising. It's the first “price” to pay, but for many people it's worth waiting for those 15 seconds of advertising in exchange for a free tera in the cloud, right?
In addition to advertising, there are limits on uploading content
In the application we can upload photos, videos and documents. We can upload photos manually and automatically, so they are always up to date. However, We can only download videos automatically. In other words, you will not be able to select which ones you want to download or not. To do this, you will have to pay for the premium version.
Another (and very important) limitation is download quality in free mode, it's 480pwhile if we pay premium it will be at 1080p. Therefore, rather than storing our memories, I would keep them more as a security backup. In case something terrible happens, we will at least have our photos and videos, even if they are of poor quality. Better that than nothing.
THE file upload It also has a limit: each one cannot weigh more than 4 GB and we can store a maximum of 20 in total. All of this is of course unlocked with the premium plan. Within the app there is a sort of gamification for the coins, something we have already seen in Asian apps like AliExpress, Shein or Temu. With these mini-games or bonuses you will earn coins that you can exchange for free months or get more storage.

The Strategy Behind Free Storage
This strategy is often used by many apps: lure in with a big claim, be able to use it minimally and then run into limitations that end up making you pay. It’s true that TeraBox is not expensive. It's four dollars per month for two tera (instead of one). Not having ads, being able to download files and photos with more freedom. Apple iCloud costs 9.99 dollars for these two tera, so yes, it's double the money every month. But is it really worth it?
We must value according to what we need. iCloud integrates much better into the system. You don't have to worry about having to “drag” photos and videos. Everything is of the highest quality and, best of all, you know that there is encryption and a company behind it that takes care of it all with maximum privacy.
Literally, with iCloud, you forget that you're using a cloud, and that, to me, has greater value than the economic savings.
TeraBox offers you an application under similar conditions for half the price, or completely free if these limitations are enough for you. My recommendation is that You can use it to create that “just in case” backup. or store things that you don't know if you'll need in the future, but don't want to delete, like old things from college.
After all, it's a free tera and we can say that there are few companies that give it away like that. Here we will have some advertisements and some limitations, but, as the saying goes, Don't look a gift horse in the mouth. In my case I will continue with iCloud, but I will combine it with this application to save the files and photos that I want to keep as backup.
