According to the guys at Protocol, speaker maker Sonos wants to cut increasingly growing competition from Apple and Amazon, not to mention Google (even though it appears to be playing in another league) and is investigating new ways to optimize audio using wireless signals.
Protocol claims that Sonos has filed for a patent that takes a different approach than the original HomePod (the model that hit the market in 2018) to optimize sound quality. In the patent filed by Sonos, entitled Systems and methods for state detection via wireless radios, the manufacturer claims that some Wi-Fi signals may be “water favored”.
This patent can be used for the “detection or absence of a human being given his physical properties” (that we are essentially water). In this way, if the speaker detects a human, it could automatically “adjust the audio characteristics” according to your location, so that we can always enjoy the best sound quality.
HomePod launched by Apple in 2018 uses built-in microphones to listen to the surroundings of the room you are in and adjust the reading, so if it is placed near a wall, it will adjust the sound quality to spread the sound throughout the room.
Like any other large company patent application, their registration does not mean that they are about to hit the market, since sometimes it can only be an idea that at that time there is no way to test.
However, it seems that Sonos has already tested this technology in their labs, rather than getting the idea and registering it, so it’s likely that the next generation of the Sonos range will already include this new feature that will undoubtedly improve the sound quality.
