Processors, like any other component of our mobile phone, are updated over time. The problem is that the delays tend to be lengthened because some of the major updates, such as the processor, have to go through the source code of the system. That is to say, the processor does not upgrade until a specific fix is released, and it is a very slow process.
However, Google has long been successful in getting some manufacturers to take a step forward in terms of integration and bring some of their software to Google Play, so it’s the Google platform that delivers it. The next one will be Qualcomm. The North American firm has confirmed that your NNAPI neural network system will be updated through google play
Smarter, more powerful processors with every update
While not all processors in the Android world are made by Qualcomm, just take a look at the quotas of different manufacturers to realize that there are plenty of Snapdragon chips roaming in the Google OS ecosystem. And now Qualcomm has found the solution to update them (many of them, not all) in a much more agile way.
This time we are not talking about security patches to fix errors but about updating API for neural networks contained in Qualcomm processors for a few years until now. This API is the one responsible for enabling the processing of artificial intelligence code in Qualcomm processors, and now it will scale faster and reach more endpoints.
Your phone’s AI will continue to evolve even if the phone is not updated by the manufacturer
Google and Qualcomm will start offering regular updates of NNAPI drivers from Google Play so that the updated processors continue to evolve in performance. In addition, these updates will be independent of the maintenance that the cell phone manufacturer does or does not do on the device, thus greatly increasing the number of recipients of the improvements. If your mobile is updated little and late, your processor will continue to do so at a good rate for a long time.
As we said, Google and Qualcomm have announced that these updates for the NNAPI will arrive regularly from Google Play, although it has not been announced when the process will begin. We know that it will be throughout 2021 but without a specific date. Therefore, it only remains to wait for the process to begin and we know which processors start to gain more power and efficiency as a result of these periodic updates.
