Synchron has started testing their brain implant with real people, and their results report is favourable.
A few months ago, information emerged about a technological advancement dedicated to brain implants. These were already in development and would allow the person to control an iPhone or iPad with their brain, managing to perform the daily activities that we all do with the device.
Sounds like something out of a fictional story, doesn’t it? However, this is very real and the progress made by those responsible for this project is Impressive.
The November report provided information on Synchron, the first US company to receive US Food and Drug Administration approval to testing a brain implant on people.
In the initial stages, specialists turned to Apple devices as one of the most important ways to carry out this project. The iPad and iPhone were chosen to test the effectiveness of the implant and its actual response.
Synchron advances in 2023
Currently, it has been revealed that this technology has already been tested with four male patients, with an average age of 61 and suffering from certain types of severe paralysis. These people were implanted with the Synchron’s first generation StentrodeTMa neuroprosthesis that manages to transmit neural signals from inside a blood vessel in the brain to a device.
So far, these tests are considered a success as all four patients completed the process with a 12-month follow-up without persistent neurological deficits. That is to say that there was no collateral damage affecting these people. On the contrary, the results are very favorable
In general terms, the implant did not generate clots and its acceptance was very good. In the response themes, the signal quality remained stable, allowing each of the participants to successfully control the personal computing device.
According to findings shared and published by the journal JAMA Neurology. Actions patients could take include:
- Write and send text messages and e-mails.
- Organize your personal finances.
- Shop online.
- Communicate many of your needs.
There is no doubt that this event could be the start of something huge. The possibilities that these kinds of technological advances could bring are of the utmost importance to continue working with the goal of improving accessibility and the lives of millions of people.
