Although there is still a little over a week left to officially know everything about iOS 18, the truth is that there is no need to wait until WWDC 2024. Apple has already presented some new features. To do this, it focused on iPhone accessibility improvements, but also included some CarPlay features that, at least on paper, are suitable for everyone.
One of them adds color filters for drivers who may feel dizzy when looking at the screen while driving. However, the one that personally catches my attention the most is the one linked to having full control of the screen without touching it
The voice, more protagonist than ever in iOS 18 CarPlay
That CarPlay works primarily with voice is not something new. In fact, it is an essential part of its operation, since it prioritizes the use through voice commands to Siri to prevent us from interacting excessively with the screen and, therefore, suffering from ‘an accident.
However, some functions require touching the screen. Even if it’s just one touch and it only takes a few seconds. See, for example, applications, particularly third-party applications. With iOS 18 what will happen is the possibility of control any app using only voice commands
The search for a example of real use to exploit this new feature, I offer the “Pocket Casts” application, which is my podcast player. In the native ‘Apple Podcast’ application you can ask it to start playing, but not in the other, so with iOS 18 I will finally be able to ask it to play a certain episode of a specific program without having to confuse it with button on the screen.
As we said at the beginning, these new features will arrive with iOS 18. Apple announced them for the end of this year and therefore they will already be with one of the versions of this new operating system. It must also be said that it will be for everyone, including the new CarPlay 2 that certain vehicles will debut throughout this year.
