Although it is common to find screens in cars that integrate different infotainment systems, such as Android Auto, Apple Carplay or others, or failing that we can also install them, but not on a motorcycle due to its characteristics. However, there are also screens on the market for install Android Auto on motorcyclesthe same way a cell phone holder can be placed.
But be careful when we install a screen because we can get upset even if we have carried out a firm assembly following the instructions: the installation does not comply with DGT laws and we receive a fine for its placement in the car . On the motorcycle, the space is smaller and more exposed, so the problem is even more delicate: This is what the DGT says that you must mount a screen with Android Auto on motorcycles and mopeds.
Before you start: what the DGT says about use
Article 76 of the law relating to traffic, the circulation of motor vehicles and road safety, general and applicable to both motorcycles and automobiles, specifies that “These are serious offenses, when they do not constitute a crime (…) driving manually using mobile phone devices in conditions other than those above, driving manually using navigators or any other means or system of communication.“
So here we have the first premise: we can’t touch the screen while driving and applies to both motorcycles and cars. If we are caught violating this article, we can receive a fine of 200 dollars and lose three to six points.
Specifically, it concerns the mobile phone and other devices such as communication systems, navigators or the screen with the vehicle’s infotainment system and be careful because not only when using, they just have to catch us with the device in hand. Concerning distractions due to the presence of devices, the fine is 100 dollars.
The second problem arises from the amendment of Law 18/2021 on Traffic, Motor Vehicle Circulation and Road Safety, in particular in point six relating to the amendment of sections 3 and 6 of article 13.
“…The use of mobile telephone devices, browsers or any other means or systems of communication while driving is prohibited, except when the development of communication takes place without using your hands or using headphones, earphones or similar instruments. The use of wireless devices certified or approved for use in protective helmets drivers of motorcycles and mopeds, for communication or navigation purposes, as long as they do not affect driving safety.“
From the previous point we clearly know that we cannot manipulate the device, so there remains the possibility of managing it using Android Auto voice commands, for which we will need a certified or approved wireless device in the headset.
The law is clear on the assembly of screens
Returning to the law relating to traffic, the circulation of motor vehicles and road safety, more precisely to article 13.2, it is specified that “The driver of a vehicle is required to maintain his own freedom of movement, the necessary field of vision and constant attention to driving, which guarantees his own safety, that of the rest of the occupants of the vehicle and that of other road users. .“.
So while there are no clear specifications on where to mount it, there is how: that does not obstruct the field of vision or movement, in the same way that he cannot divert our attention. Be careful because in this case there are no supports approved by the DGT, it will be enough if they meet the previous premises. That said and for obvious reasons, it is important that it is a firm support that is resistant to movement and bad weather.
