Dealing with the World

The new 3D camera seems to come in lighter with the next iPhone. It will take a dither of lasers to have a 3D image with the rear camera. We shouldn't be afraid to carry these lasers on mobile, as if we had Luke Skywalker.

Ever since Apple added a facial ID to the iPhone X, every time we expose our cell phone to face, a very similar set of lasers scan our faces, a few times a day. And we are not blind, so there is nothing to fear.

A report published yesterday by Free Company confirms that Apple has taken advantage of Lumentum in San José to provide VCSEL lasers that will enable 3D "World-Facing" sensor at least one of the new iPhones will be released this year.

VCSELs have been an integral part of the original TrueDepth camera from the iPhone X in 2017. Because of them it is possible to have functions such as ID faces, Animojis, and selfies in image mode. Installation of this technology on the rear camera will enhance 3D images.

Litterum looks poised to be the exclusive supplier of VCSELs in the background, according to a published report. Rumors have also surfaced that the technology will only be available on two high-end iPhones introduced this year, leaving some calls without giving them the specified camera.

These same rumors suggest that the more expensive models will be a 6.7-inch iPhone and a 6.1-inch iPhone with OLED screens and triple lens cameras, similar to the current iPhone 11 Pro. Rumors this week claim that Apple upgraded the iOS 14 physical app with the code name "Gobi." This app will allow users to get more details about the world around them.
