In absolute terms, Apple products are expensive compared to those of its competitors. One can make a complex debate around this by counting all the surrounding factors, but this has always been Apple’s strategy throughout its history. Now there is the dear and then there is the absurdly expensive.
Am I talking about the $480 wheels for the Mac Pro? No, but I’m talking about its worthy successor: the tilting and height-adjustable stand of the new Apple Studio Display it costs the trifle of 460 dollars
At 46 dollars per centimeter of adjustable height
This stand looks a bit like the $1,000 XDR Pro display stand, giving you 10.5cm of width so you can adjust the height with very little effort. I have no doubt that the engineering effort that Apple had to put in to be able to move a 27-inch monitor with one finger must have been tremendous, but it makes me wonder if these 460 dollars will convince buyers
Keep in mind that there are interesting alternatives if we choose the option with the VESA support for the Studio Display, such as this arm to be able to lift it and position it as we wish without even having a support. With such huge price differences, Apple’s choice is hard to fathom beyond simple design choice.
It’s something so concrete that we’ll never see how it translated into sales. And in fact, the same thing I said can also apply to the monitor as a whole when there are 4K screens two or three times cheaper.
