The copyright directive finally reached Europe, implemented by a royal decree-law and without any possibility of debate. The new directive, or new law on intellectual property, is responsible for collecting everything that is provided for in the European directive. Thus, in Europe, articles 15 and 17 of the said European directive will be implemented, which automatically opens the door when Google News returns.
Unfortunately, this new law is also postulated as a system of content censorship through algorithms, since these will be in charge of deciding what is censored and what is not without human intervention or judicial oversight. Google itself has indicated that it needs to analyze this new law in detail.
New Intellectual Property Law Opens Door for News Return
On December 16, 2014, Google News closed its doors in Europe. It was about the movement of the multinational towards the landing of that known under the name of Canon AEDE which slipped into the previous law on intellectual property established in our country. This law established that Google, as an aggregator, had to pay the media
It was then that Google, in a ruling already anticipated in previous weeks, announced that Google News was not a source of revenue for the company and that it was closing in our country. Google then claimed that it saw no other option but to shut it down, so it lowered the blind. As he had done in other countries elsewhere.
Today, almost 7 years after this decision, Google is considering the return of News in our country due, as we said, to the arrival of the new intellectual property law. “The right conditions seem to exist for a potential Google News launch in Europe“, a Google spokesperson told Europa Press.
“However, we need time to analyze the new law in detail. We will make decisions on our next steps shortly,” the spokesperson said below. Thus, the arrival of the new law opens the door to the return of Google News and the company itself is thinking about it well that we’ll have to be patient until we know Google’s final decision in this regard. We’ll see what happens eventually.
