Augmented Reality is one of those technologies that used to be talked about a lot, but now something goes unnoticed; it feels like no one has managed to tap into its true potential, beyond some apps and games that put graphics over an actual image.

Google has already tried to launch an augmented reality device, Google Glass, and more recently Facebook and Apple have been working on their own projects, but at this stage it’s not even clear that they will hit the market. Maybe it’s because walking down the street with special glasses isn’t very appealing.
Augmented reality according to Audi
For this reason and others, the latest prototype presented by Audi, called Activesphere, is so interesting, as it applies augmented reality technology to a self-driving car. It makes perfect sense: if the car is able to drive itself, we will have plenty of free time and space to enjoy different experiences.
The interior of the Activesphere has been designed to provide an augmented reality experience, which is why the steering wheel retracts when autonomous mode is activated, and the entire dashboard becomes an area where objects appear in three dimensions, displaying everything from journey information to 3D maps of the area we are passing through.
Audi has designed glasses that connect to the car’s system to show an experience that doesn’t have to be the same for every occupant. For example, the passenger next to us could change the temperature of his climate zone, simply by moving his hand as if there were a floating control, while we check route data such as altitude changes or the speed at which we are going. . But the biggest coup de grace will be in front: instead of the traditional grille, the car has a window that allows us to see the road.
This is not the only innovation of the Activesphere. Perhaps more surprising is its ability to transform between two different types of cars, depending on what we want at any given time.
By default it will be a coupe-shaped sports car, something similar to the other models of the brand, but its chassis can be transformed and become a pickup truck with cargo space for bicycles or whatever we need . It’s not just that the tailgate will open, it’s that the suspension will rise and the bottom of the car will extend to dramatically improve off-road capabilities.
The Activesphere is based on the PPP (Premium Platform Electric) platform and is therefore an electric car with similar power to the current Audio E-Tron GT Quatrro. This will facilitate the late 2023 production of a future Audi model that will be based on the lines of this Activesphere, although probably without many of these innovations.
