As usually happens whenever a major update is released, the Google Pixel not only received a slew of new features with the new June release, but they also many security fixes. And with critical errors that endanger owners of a Google mobile phone.
Google’s recently released June quarterly update finally brought Gemini Nano to the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8a, opened up the entire Pixel 8 family’s display port to share videos via USB C, and introduced Camera improvements to improve HDR shooting
June update fixes seven critical bugs
The June quarter, surely the last before all compatible models are finally updated to stable Android 15, receives many news as well as security fixes which fix a long list of vulnerabilities. The update was delayed almost until the middle of the month despite the fact that the patches had been ready since June 5.
As Google details on its developers page, critical security flaws allowed attackers take control of vulnerable Google Pixels. These critical failures total seven; with effects ranging from the Google Tensor’s Mali GPU to the Goodix fingerprint readers mounted on the Pixel.
As detailed in Cybersecurity Help, thanks to the critical security flaws that affected the Pixel an application could execute arbitrary code through incorrect data validation by components mounted on the phones. All of these bugs have been fixed, not just the most critical ones: the full list amounts to a total of 50 security fixes.
Google recommends that all Google Pixel owners update as soon as possible. The company is unaware that most of the vulnerabilities are being exploited, but it is aware that at least one is currently being used to execute malicious code on devices (CVE-2024-32896). If you have a Google Pixel, update now.
