Apple is developing two devices with a home-compatible display that could launch next year
The HomePod with screen, according to rumor, could be one of the new devices that Apple will present in 2025. It is not yet known whether Apple will include it in its speaker category, since it will have a new operating system called homeOS
Just a few days ago it was leaked that this new device would have a square screen, which is strange since the format is not very suitable for content consumption. And now new information is coming that ensures that we will have two different screen sizes
More details on the HomePod with screen
Apple is the only company to design smart speakers without screen option. Amazon and Google offer many different speakers and many of them have screens. Having a screen is interesting to offer better information, a key aspect of this type of device, as well as to be able to view content, from photos to series and films.
But that could change in 2025. According to Mark Gurman, Apple is developing two devices with homeOS. One of them with a large “robotic” screen, similar in size to an iPad, and another with a smaller screen for using FaceTime and controlling different home accessories.
Apple’s next operating system could be homeOS and power two new smart display products. Apple is taking a different approach to the smart home market, an area where results have been mixed so far. As I mentioned before, the largest product in development is a tabletop device called J595, which combines a robotic limb with a large iPad-like screen. It’s also working on a model called J490, a low-end smart display for using FaceTime and controlling home appliances.
Gurman says that the most affordable device will be launched in 2025although it does not exclude that the most ambitious option also arrives next year. We are talking about a price that could be around 1,000 dollars. Both devices would have powerful hardware that would allow them to run Apple Intelligence without issue.
The hardware and AI teams worked together to create these devices, so Apple Intelligence should be an important feature. Gurman also states that Apple has promoted a magnetic design
The two new products are seen as a collaboration between Apple’s home device hardware engineering groups and artificial intelligence groups. The low-end smart display is designed to run apps such as Calendar, Notes and Home, and will include an interface optimized for controlling home appliances and quickly viewing information. When developing prototypes, Apple imagined the device magnetically attached to walls or placed on a desk.
This device seems quite interesting, and could become the smart home center. HomeKit is a very powerful platform for the home, and since the arrival of Matter, many more accessories are available. These new devices could greatly improve the experience.
