We have talked about the situation of Huawei in several articles of this media, but until now we have not explained how the Chinese company enters the segment of foldable mobiles. The company already had two models in its native country, the 2019 Huawei Mate X and the Huawei Mate Xs that we were able to test, but it was only the third that it decided to bring flexible mobiles to other markets.
The device chosen was the Huawei P50 Pocket, a terminal with a shell format very similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 which we have talked about so much in this annual experiment of foldable mobiles.
While waiting to receive a test unit to analyze it in depth (our colleagues from Omicrono were able to test it) today I wanted to focus on an aspect that caught my attention, the price.
The price of the Huawei P50 Pocket is very high
When Huawei confirmed that it would bring its foldable terminal to Europe, I thought they knew Samsung was pushing hard not only in terms of technology or brand positioning, but even in terms of price, with Galaxy Z Flip 3 offers really striking.
What was my surprise when I saw this this P50 Pocket would be on sale at 1599 dollars, almost double what its biggest rival on sale costs and about the same as the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3.
On equal terms, this mobile would have a big disadvantage against Samsung, but it is that Huawei’s American ve to prevents it from playing on equal terms. Doesn’t have 5G or Google services
Huawei points to a segment where price doesn’t matter
This award, along with the particular design of the units presented at the press event They made me think if Huawei does not point more towards a sector that values design than one who values technology.
In this sector, the fashion, the price is something much less rational and more linked to tastes and to an image that one wants to project. 5G, for example, is not important.
Unsurprisingly, Huawei has teamed up with fashion designer Iris Van Herpen to create a version of this terminal, the one you see in the photos in this article, which our colleagues from Omicrono took. This Danish designer uses a lot of technology in her creations, which goes in the same direction as what Huawei seems to be looking for.
This idea is reinforced by the detail that Huawei must give Huawei Freebuds lipstick with the purchase of this mobile. We don’t say this because of the price (around 200 dollars) but because it is perhaps the most iconic design wireless headphones.
This change in strategy could make sense for the brand, allowing it to grow in an environment where the limitations imposed by the US veto are not so relevant, but it is true that Samsung also wants to enter this sector, with Z Flip 3 variants like the Bespoke Edition and, most importantly, there’s Apple.
