Laments for the latest iPod touch still echo within the same home walls that once saw his glory days. We are all saddened that such an iconic product lose its place in the ecosystem – although the correct thing is to say that it has been integrated more than any other Apple product in all the novelties they offer us. The thousand songs in our pockets have become fifty million on our wristAnd that seems normal to us.
The HomePod will be redesigned, but the technology is different: a new model that must meet the still valid aspirations of Steve Jobs
The iPod existed so that many other things could exist: we are talking about predecessor of the iPhone but we often forget how important it was to Steve Jobs. Literally, Apple was playing iPod or Cross, but this fucking fool knew what he was doing. What I didn’t like was where we used the iPod at home: docking stations with built-in speakers were horrible – according to him – at the time. So they built their own, they called it Ipod Hi-Fi and it didn’t go well at all. The problem is that no one really knows why.
With the HomePod, Apple seemed to have found the key: a powerful and quality speaker with a spectacular design which seemed to usher in a whole range of new devices. It was well received despite being the first generation of a product, but a year ago Apple told us that the technology they wanted to continue exploring was not that- there, but that of the HomePod mini.
The HomePod will return by reinventing itself
So here we are again, in this little crossroads where the company seems to decide if this mini technology is the enough Max as if to give birth to another HomePod: halfway between the original and the mini, and closer to an increasingly saturated market but with many voids to fill. The HomePod could be anything, even exceed the expectations of that Jobs who only wanted Bob Dylan to ring the thunder at home but also be something else. The quest to find this concept is still ongoing – and like any quest for perfection, an important part is the journey.
This week, with Antonio Sabán (coordinator of Genbeta and Xataka Home), we commented on the podcast Las Charlas de Applesfera how can the HomePod come back – agree on an idea that we would both like to see in our living room furniture: a device that would allow us to use FaceTime on any television. Or maybe it’s jurisdiction of the future Apple TV? We’ll see. We also talk about the impact of these future Apple Glass which already seem to have been presented to Apple bosses or this Apple Watch Series 8 which – this year yes – seems to come with the design for which we sighed in September.
