A change in Face ID sensor configuration will make the redesign easier
Lately we have received a large number of rumors regarding the iPhone17 of Apple. We are at the dawn of one of the most important weeks of the year for Apple and in which Mac computers will be the real protagonists, but in recent days we have been able to meet many more details on the iPhone 17.
A few days ago, news leaked about the much-rumored iPhone 17 Air and some technical specifications of the iPhone 17 Pro. Now a new rumor confirms our suspicions, Apple plans to reduce the size of Dynamic Island.
The dynamic island refers to the element that brings together the front camera and Face ID sensors in the upper central area of the iPhone screen. It is the evolution of notch and is designed to offer all kinds of software animations with advertisements, notifications and live activities.
How Apple will reduce the size of Dynamic Island
Apple hasn’t changed the iPhone’s Dynamic Island design in years. It is true that many competing manufacturers have designed smartphones with a much smaller hole in the screen for the front camera. However, Apple needs a little more space for the hardware components of Face ID, considered the most accurate facial recognition system on the market.
Jeff Puanalyst at Haitong International, shared an investor statement (via MacRumors) in which he explains how Apple will use a new innovative technology to significantly reduce the size of the Dynamic Island on the iPhone 17 Pro Max.
According to his words, the iPhone 17 Pro Max will adopt a “metal” for Face ID which will facilitate this design change on the terminal screen. Traditional iPhone cameras have curved lenses that redirect light to the image sensor (CIS). But a metalente is a much thinner, flatter lens with microscopic patterns capable of focusing light with much greater precision.
The Metalentes are also known as super conformal lenses. Its two-dimensional flat lens nano-structure has a thickness less than the wavelength and integrates a series of optical elements that focus and change light properties.
This technology was developed to focus light on much smaller scales, allowing the creation of higher resolution images than conventional microscopes and cameras. Additionally, the metal lenses have a carefully designed pattern to manipulate the spread of light, which also provides the ability to focus different wavelengths of light on the same focal point.
Everything seems to indicate that The metal lens will be an exclusive new feature for the Face ID camera of the iPhone 17 Pro Max and will not be available on iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Air or other iPhone 17 models.
The Dynamic Island was born in 2022 with the arrival of the iPhone 14 Pro and the iPhone 14 Pro Max. The iPhone 17 range will be announced in September 2025.
