The iPhone’s Lightning connector could be numbered

connector, iPhones, Lightning, numbered

Many years have passed since the Lightning port first appeared. The first product to use it was the iPhone 5From there it started to appear in many other products. From iPad to accessories like AirPods or Magic Mouse. All have this connector.

Compared to its predecessor, the 30-pin connector, the improvements have been remarkable. More compact and reversible, allowing easy and quick connection with compatible devices. However, the drawbacks also existed and do exist, starting with the fact that it is not compatible with products outside the ecosystem.

On another side, industry adopted USB-C. A standard that has standardized all kinds of devices, from computers to mobile devices, with an equally compact format capable of adapting to the latest technologies. The one that Apple does not end up accepting, at least voluntarily.

According to Reuters, the European Commission will propose a new law in September to impose a universal charger for all electronic devices. In the case of Android phones, that wouldn’t be a big deal, as many are already using the USB-C connector. For the iPhone, it’s a whole different story.

This new legislation would also affect the connector of phones, which would imply that the Lightning connector should give way to USB-C. For users, the change would mean greater convenience thanks to much wider compatibility. Unfortunately, this is not the first time that something like this has been attempted.

A few years ago, the European Commission attempted to introduce a similar law with the same purpose. However, he ultimately failed. Today, USB-C is already present in many other products, and even Apple itself included it in lines like the iPad. Maybe the possible success of this law will finally bring USB-C to the iPhone.
