After a long wait, users can finally install the new big Windows 11 update, the only one that Microsoft will release in 2024. The update, also known as Windows 11 24H2, brings important new features, including regarding Generative based features. AI and co-pilot; Users who do not own a Copilot+ computer will be interested to know that the update brings improvements in terms of autonomy and compatibility with new technologies such as WiFi 7.
In other words, this seemed like one of those updates that was worth installing as soon as they were available. However, a big mistake from Microsoft could change our minds, and it might be best to wait before updating; At least, if we don’t have much free storage space left.
And the first users who were able to install the Windows 11 24H2 update found that they had lost storage space; specifically, there is 8.63 GB of space they cannot use or recover in no case, and all because of Windows 11, or rather its update installation program, Windows Update.
And these almost 9 GB of space are occupied by the files necessary for the 24H2 update. Typically, Windows Update first downloads an update’s files to the C: drive before installing it; Once the installation is complete, the system usually keeps the files, in case something goes wrong and a reinstallation is necessary. If the user prefers, you can delete these files easily
However, users who already use 24H2 have realized that cleaning tool does not workand is not able to delete update files. Although the program tries to do its job, it fails and the files continue to occupy the same 8.93 GB as before.
In other words, Windows 11 occupies almost 9 GB of space which cannot be recovered in any way even by manually deleting files. This is not an ideal situation, especially since this is one of the most anticipated updates in recent Windows 11 history, so many people will have performed a manual update to get the news without having to wait their turn. Although 9 GB is not a lot of space these days, it all depends on the size of the disk or SSD we use for the Windows installation; If you’re not careful, you can stay at 0 without realizing it, and that’s where the problems will start.
The good news is that Microsoft is already aware of this problem and is working to resolve it.thanks to the users who posted the bug on the company’s official forums. Microsoft has confirmed to Windows Latest that it will release a patch that will allow files to be deleted in a future update; although he was unable to give an exact date when this will happen.
