Apple has been working on an update to the Mac mini with the M1 chip for some time. About two years ago they announced this desk, and it’s time to make the leap to the M2. reliable sources like Gurman, Prosser or Kuo set the launch of this new Mac in Octoberand everything indicates that this will be the case.
Redesigned… or not
There are a lot of unknowns when it comes to design. A year ago, Prosser offered us 3D renderings, supposedly based on real images, of the new look of the Mac mini. This device would have more ports, it would be thinner, it would use the same power system as the iMac and would be covered in plexiglass. Gurman also signaled that he expects a redesigned Mac mini, though he didn’t give specifics.
On the other hand, Kuo, one of the world’s most renowned analysts and leakers, claims that there will be no overhaul. It should be noted that the Prosser and Gurman fountains are closer to Apple Park, while the Kuo fountains are on the production line. If anyone knows exactly what Apple makes, it’s him.
Beautiful on the outside, and on the inside?
In this case, Gurman is the one who provided the most technical specifications on this desk. According to, Apple is testing a device (J473) with eight CPU cores and 10 GPU cores, which perfectly matches an M2 chip. Gurman also explained that Apple allegedly tested configurations of the Mac mini with the M1 Pro chip, but were ultim ately discarded.
That would be interesting because a quick look at the Mac product line reveals something curious: the M1 Pro chip is the only one that cannot be used on a desktop computer. The M1 is covered by the Mac mini, and the M1 Max and Ultra are in the Mac Studio. Obviously Apple isn’t going to release a Mac with an M1 chip now, but maybe in the future we will see a Mac mini with an M2 Pro. It would make a lot of sense.
This might suggest that it’s possible that, as Kuo says, the Mac mini with the M2 chip would have the same design as the previous one, which would mean that the redesigned desktop that Gurman and Prosser are talking about would be a Mac mini with a M2 Pro, it won’t take long to find out everything indicates that we will see the Mac mini with M2 chip in October.
At the event or at the event?
A week ago we all knew that Apple was preparing another opening speech theirs for October. However, a few days ago, Gurman dropped the bombshell: thinks Apple will announce missing products this year in press releases, not at an event. This has us all baffled and is arguably the biggest unknown in the Apple world right now.
To say something like that with so little leeway, Gurman must be very sure. For Apple to announce an event a few days after this prediction would be a blow to its credibility. On the other hand, if despite going against the whole industry, he ends up being right, his reputation will explode. It’s clear he knows something the rest of us don’t, and there’s very little left to prove it..
