Which Mac Should I Buy? The question that those of us in the Apple ecosystem receive the most and whose answer depends, and a lot, on the use that we are going to give to the computer. Are some computers better than others? On a personal level, yes, clearly, because the preferences of each of us will lead us to one format or another, but what about a global level?
It’s been a while since Apple stopped reporting the number of computers sold each quarter. That leaves us with a few guesses based on the benefits of the Mac division, but nothing else. Fortunately, there are companies dedicated to calculating this data that allows us to deduce the evolution of the Mac market.
40% of all Macs sold are MacBook Pros
One of these companies is CIRP, which in its recent report states that it offers us some figures on the Mac sales in the last quarter of 2022, from September to December, in the middle of Christmas. There are several figures that catch the eye, such as the number of Mac Pro computers that have been sold, for example, well ahead of the Mac mini or Mac Studio.
In general, The Macs that attract the most attention are the MacBooks. Whether it’s the MacBook Pro, at 40%, or the MacBook Air, at 34%, laptops represent 74% of Mac sales over this period. In other words, two-thirds of the Macs Apple has ever sold are laptops, which puts the desktop line pretty far behind.
Within this range, that of desktop computers, the iMac is the winner, with 13% of the total, while it is closely followed by the Mac Pro with 11%. Much further behind are the Mac mini and Mac Studio with its 1% of the total and 4% in Desktop models. Often when we talk about Mac Pro we are talking about a niche computer, one that is only intended for very specific profiles. It’s true, but its sales, at least in this last quarter of 2022, are quite remarkable.
Another interesting fact to extract is that of the most popular Mac. We already advanced it in the title, but we can go deeper into the data. That laptops outsell desktops is something we already see in the rest of the industry, but in the Apple catalog you’d expect it to be the MacBook Air the one which, with its lowest price, crowned the sales. Well, it turns out not, for a sizable 6%, the MacBook Pro is the most-purchased computer.
Although it must be remembered that this is not official data, the truth is that the values paint a curious picture and perhaps with several details that we would not expect. To say, yes, that quarter by quarter, plus if we add the launches -even the rumors-, these numbers change and evolve. In any case, but they reflect that, at the end of 2022, the MacBook Pro was the best Mac, or at least the best seller.
