This novelty will forever change iOS but Apple would only launch it in Europe according to new iOS 17 rumors.
We’re just weeks away from the iOS 17 reveal, WWDC 2023 is happening in early June, and it seems the new iPhone operating system will arrive with important newsas a diary app built into iOS 17. And what’s probably the The most important novelty in the history of iOS could be exclusive to the European market.
Since iOS is iOS, and more than 16 years have passed, Apple closely scrutinized what could be installed on the iPhone
However, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman left an important tidbit on the MacRumors podcast: this iOS 17 feature would be exclusive to European iPhones. Something that makes some sense because it’s the only place in the world where there’s a clear law that forces Apple to do it. In the podcast, I also talk about two iOS 17 apps that will be completely renewed.
Apple will do the bare minimum to comply with the law
As Gurman explains, Apple won’t enable third-party app stores and app sideloading in iOS 17 on its own, in fact it is against his philosophy. It does so simply because the Digital Markets Act requires it.
And for this reason, Apple does the bare minimum to comply with these regulations.which are currently only approved in the European Union.
I think this will be a Europe-only feature. I don’t think they’re going to shoot themselves in the foot and expand this globally if they don’t have to.
If you remember, there was this change in the Netherlands regarding dating apps and the percentage there. And so you have to install a special profile, you have to go through some sort of hoop to do that, and it was well under the radar.
So I think they will push more in that direction. I’d be a little surprised if they announced it at WWDC and considered it a premium feature for consumers. I think they want to minimize it as much as possible.
We are at the gates of one of the biggest changes in iOS history, but it’s a change that Apple is forcing and not because they believe in it. It is therefore quite logical that it does not advertise too much and that it is only allowed where necessary. Although Europe was only the first to adopt a regulation, other countries will soon have it.
