Netflix is trying to get out of the shared accounts controversy, which has been making headlines in Europe, by launching new functions and utilities that can improve the experience of users who have decided to stay on the platform.
Not so long ago, the list of titles of the Netflix application was improved, for example, in addition to improving the subtitles. But the change that has now been discovered in the Android TV and Google TV version of Netflix can be even better for many people, especially those who want to enjoy their movies in the best possible way.
And it is that everything indicates that Netflix is already compatible with the frame rate adaptation technology
Netflix will look better
Many modern televisions are capable of varying the screen refresh rate to match the content being played. This means that the number of times per second the screen refreshes the image corresponds to the number of frames per second that the content displays; this coincidence is desirable to obtain smoother picture and without annoying problems.
For example, it is very possible that we have already noticed how a video seems to “skip”, or that from time to time there is a kind of “tremors” in the picture. In the worst case, these glitches can seriously affect the experience and distract us from what’s going on in the story (though admittedly some people don’t care). The problem is that it is very rare that the content and the screen coincide in frequency. Many panels have a base frame rate of 60 Hz (60 refreshes per second), and it’s rare to find films shot at 60 frames per second that match this rate perfectly; the problem can be exacerbated on modern displays that support higher frequencies, such as 120Hz or 144Hz.
Android TV is already compatible with a technology that makes it possible to synchronize the frequency of the screen with the number of frames per second of the content, from version 12 of the operating system; but applications must implement support on their own. As they discovered in Flat PanelsHD
In the tests they did, the tv went down to 24hz automatically when a series like The Witcher was reproduced, which streams at 24 frames per second; and went up to 50hz with a documentary based on the Tour de France dropping to 50fps. When the application returns to the menus, the base speed of the TV is reached, which in this case was 60 Hz. The system is even able to synchronize with fractional frame rates, such as 23,976 frames per second, which are still used by some Hollywood production companies.
The experience should improve a lot with this improvement, which is present in version 10.0.4 of the application for Android TV and Google TV, if our TV has Android 12 or if we use a Chromecast.
