The midrange is the most competitive segment of the Android market. Not in vain, in the range of 400 dollars we can already find very interesting mobiles, like the Pixel 6a with cameras and a pure Android experience against which it is difficult to compete. In this context, OPPO arrives with a new competitor, the OPPO A98 5G at 399 dollars.
At this precise price, which sits right in the middle of many great devices, it’s hard to compete; It is not enough to launch a normal mobile, and you have to excel in at least one thing if you want to stand out. And although at first glance it looks like a conventional mobile, this OPPO model has exactly that.
Where OPPO has focused the most, without a doubt, is on the battery and everything that has to do with charging. The company has a battery of no less than 5,000mAh, something that is not very common in this sector; Normally, large batteries are reserved for lower-end models, and as you go up in price, priorities tend to shift.
Mid-range with great battery
So just that 5,000 mAh battery should already be enough to consider the OPPO A98 5G, but that’s not the only thing it has. OPPO has also rolled out its fast charging version, called SUPERVOOC, to achieve a 67W charging power. The company claims that it is able to get up to 6 hours of calls or 2.5 hours of video viewing from a charge of just 5 minutes. The charger is included in the box, so we will have everything we need to take advantage of this technology.
Having a large battery does not necessarily mean that the mobile will last a long time. For this reason, OPPO has also integrated a battery management chip created by the company itself, the Battery Health Engine. According to OPPO, this will mainly help the useful life of the battery, going so far as to claim that after 1,600 charge and discharge cycles, the battery will retain 80% of its original capacity.
As for the rest of the device, it looks more conventional. It is processor based Snapdragon 695 accompanied by 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, although the inclusion of an SD card slot up to 1TB is appreciated. Like other models, it is compatible with OPPO RAM technology which converts up to 8 GB of storage into RAM. The company claims that the A98 5G has passed “fluid protection” tests; in other words, it promises that after four years of use, the phone will only “age” by 10% and should feel just as fast.
As for the cameras, OPPO commits to a family set, with a main camera of 64 Mpx accompanied by a depth camera and a microlens of only 2 Mpx each; the latter is used to take pictures as if it were a microscope magnification up to 40. The selfie camera gets more love, reaching 32MP. Finally, the screen measures 6.72 inches and stands out for its 120 Hz refresh rate.
The OPPO A98 5G will be available in Europe from June 1 for 399 dollars, but it can already be reserved on the official website; users who do so will receive free Enco Buds 2 headphones.
