A month ago, Apple presented its commitment to new operating systems at WWDC 2024. It was a very comprehensive keynote with iOS 18, iPadOS 18, tvOS 18, watchOS 11, macOS Sequoia and visionOS 2. After a month in which only developers tested Apple’s operating systems, The day has come when all who wish can join to Apple’s public beta program and join the adventure.
The iOS 18 Public Beta and What to Keep in Mind
The presentation of iOS 18 (and the rest of the operating systems) took place on June 10. However, the The final version will take place in mid-September.. In other words, there are three months of development and improvements. To achieve this optimization, the operating system goes through different versions approximately every 15 days. These versions are called beta.
In Apple’s release schedule, we have developer betas and public betas. The Developer betas are the first to be releasedas it is considered a more unstable and crash-prone operating system. However, public betas are for more mature software.
A public beta is still a test version in which you may experience shorter battery life, slightly lower performance, and overheating in certain situations.
These “inconveniences” are the price to pay for being able to enjoy the operating system before the rest of the public. From my own experience with an iPhone 15 Pro Max, the The overall performance of iOS 18 is very good and it didn’t cause me any problems in my daily life.
What are the differences between a public beta and a developer version of iOS 18?
The essence of beta versions is the same, but there are different time limits for their installation. A developer beta version is available for download as soon as it is released by Apple. The difference is that Apple ‘delays’ iOS 18 public beta by a month to ensure there are no bugs serious. Therefore, there is no difference in operating system between a public beta and a developer beta. It is the same iOS, the difference is just when it is released to the public. That’s why there is a separation between the number of betas which corresponds to the promoter and the public.
