Any electronic device is not immune to the passage of time. We are not only talking about its useful life here, but also its economic value. If we take the example of a cell phone, it is clear that Its value will not be the same at launch as eight or ten months later. This is something that becomes obvious if we look at the second-hand market, even with phones that have only been available for a few months.
Obviously, not all phones lose value this quickly. Those that are high-end, like the Galaxy S24, they resist this devaluation much better. In fact, as Sell Cell points out (via Forbes), it appears that phones flagship from Samsung retain their value longer.
Samsung phones lose less value than other Android phones
As they say, it seems that Samsung takes longer to lose value on its phones. Putting the numbers on the table, the Sell Cell study shows that the Galaxy S22 series lost an average of 66.7% of its value in the 12 months following its launch. However, the Galaxy S23 series did better over the same period: losing on average 61% of its value.
This data also shows some pretty promising numbers regarding the new Galaxy S24. These, present on the market for six months, depreciated by 50.4%. which represents an improvement compared to S23 and S22 for the same period (respectively 54.1% and 54.4%).
This study does not bring much good news for Applewhich is the queen of keeping the price of its devices as high as possible. Concretely, the iPhone 14 lost 47.7% of its value in the 12 months following its launch, a figure slightly increasing compared to the iPhone 13 (which lost 46.2% of its value in the same time ).
The figures of the two companies are still far away, but little by little they are equalizing. It remains to be seen how the depreciation of the next Galaxy S25 will behave, devices which, if nothing strange happens, They should arrive in stores next January.
