In Europe there are more and more options for smart vacuum cleaners, able to vacuum and clean our house independently. We were recently able to test the eufy RoboVac L70 Hybrid for a few weeks, a very complete model which is very competitively priced for its technical characteristics.
A design in its category
In terms of design, we don’t have many surprises, since the robot vacuums are all cut in the same pattern. We have the characteristic cylindrical figure of this type of device, being the most practical for moving around the nooks and crannies of the house.
Perhaps the most remarkable point of this vacuum cleaner is its projection in which we appreciate the eufy logo. This elevation prevents it from passing through areas such as under a sofa with raised legs, but while that may seem like a downside, it does have a certain advantage, namely that inside there is a series of sensors that allow the the device to analyze the environment with a better perspective.
The robot has a front bumper for any type of collision, although thanks to the sensors the robot ends up braking before crashing in most situations.
At the bottom we see several sensors, the main brush and a single side brush that will move the dust to facilitate suction, nothing surprising or different from other robots in the category.
The device has a water tank and a mop to scrub while vacuuming, an addition that in its category we consider to be present yes or yes. Using it, however, is optional, and if we don’t want to scrub, just remove the water tank and its mop, while in case we want to scrub, we can even regulate the amount of water that we will use during cleaning inside. application, as well as defining in which areas of the house we do not want to clean.
Vacuum and scrub
Launching the device for the first time is as easy as connecting the base to the power supply, starting the app and, after the initial setup, pressing the button to start cleaning.
The robot uses a laser navigation system called iPath, which generates the cleaning map in real time and moves efficiently. During the cleaning performed, we did not notice any strange patterns when moving around the house, being able to see the robot’s movement on the map itself.
One of the strengths of the eggy RoboVac L70 Hybrid is its technology Boost-IQ, technology that analyzes the terrain as it sucks, increasing the suction power when passing through a carpet or any other terrain that resists it. This technology works automatically, although we can turn it off so that it is never activated and the suction power remains constant.
Speaking of suction power, we have four levels to calibrate the suction capacity in silent, standard, turbo and maximum mode, where a silent and standard mode stand out which are not excessively noisy. We also have a brush-only mode, which does not suck and further reduces operating noise.
In terms of timing, cleaning in standard mode takes about an hour to clean an apartment with 3 bedrooms and two bathrooms. The figure is indicative, because depending on the size of your house and the arrangement of the furniture it can vary, but it seems to us a more than decent cleaning time, although its battery guarantees up to 2.5 hours of operation, so even if your house is big enough, it should be able to do the entire trip at one time.
Software and application experience
In any connected device, software has become a crucial component, and in the case of robot vacuums, it plays a double role. On the one hand we have the invisible part, which are the internal algorithms that allow the robot to move autonomously and efficiently to vacuum the largest possible area of our house, while on the other hand we have all the interaction part.
The mobile application is an important element, because it allows the robot to become an entity that cleans the whole house when told to be able to give us the most personalized cleaning experience possible. When I bought my first robotic vacuum cleaner I was not aware of it and did not pay much attention to it, but as I tested new models I came to see it as a important element.
To fully benefit from the potential of the eggy RoboVac L70 Hybrid, it is essential to download the EufyHome application, available on Google Play. This app requires us to create an Anker account, something understandable, although it wouldn’t hurt if we could log in with our Google, Facebook, or Apple account as that option was a small area for improvement.
In the application we find the basic functions of this type of robot, such as being able to update its firmware, start vacuuming, select the suction modes or ask it to return to its charging base, as well as check the device’s battery level or receive notifications that tell us if the robot is stuck somewhere in the house.
Programming is a crucial aspect of these robots and what really makes them shine by making us not have to worry. We can create multiple schedules for one or more days of the week at a certain time and suction power. For example, if we are not at home on Saturday afternoon, we can never program it so that at that time it consumes maximum power, while if we are at home the whole day. week all day, we can schedule it to run silently.
The limit of the schedules you can do is not defined by the application, but in my case I was able to test and have up to 12 active schedules, a lot more than what you might need (in my case j I have 3 active, one from Monday to Friday, another for Saturday and another for Sunday.
Mapping the house is a common feature of robot vacuums in this category, keep in mind often. The L70 Hybrid is able to map each household cleaning, a map that we can personalize by establishing areas where the robot will not clean or pass but will not scrub the floor.
We also have manual controls to control the robot. It works well to clean a specific area, although on a personal level it is not that I consider it to be a very practical tool, because in the end between the search for the mobile, you open the application, you access the manual controls and you control the robot, you end up before you take the broom of all life and get to the concrete point. Of course, this is a personal appreciation, and it’s always better to have the option than not to have it.
The eufy Home application has its own desktop widget from which we can access the quick functions of starting a cleaning and accessing the charging base. The functionality is basic but it is more than enough if we need quick access.
One mode that I really liked is the mode called “Share configuration”, if we activate this mode we can allow another user to access the configuration of the eggy RoboVac L70 Hybric, so that our partner, our family or roommates can also interact with the robot. It is necessary, if so, that these users also have their own account in the application.
Regarding integrations with home automation systems, we have the possibility to connect the eggy RoboVac L70 Hybrid with Google Home and Alexa, to be able to activate the vacuum cleaner with our preferred voice assistant or to integrate cleaning tasks into specific routines of our home automation system.
The application also has a tool that informs us of the status of sensors, filters and brushes. While the sensors do require cleaning, filters and brushes, the app suggests replacement, although with frequent cleaning they should last longer.
We like the performance of the app very much, although it can still be improved. On a personal level, I think the ability to edit the map might have a room memory that might delimit which part of the map is our bedroom, kitchen, or living room. It is true that we have the possibility of asking the vacuum cleaner from the application to clean a certain area, but it is an individual action and having a memory of the parts we would have liked to have direct access to certain cleanings, that is to say in the application or via voice commands in the assistants with which it is compatible.
A complete robot vacuum cleaner with few weaknesses
The eufy RoboVac L70 Hybrid is offered at a price of 499 dollars, which places it in the intermediate range of this type of device. In its category we highlight a very complete application with all the options that we can demand from a device of its category. We also really liked the noise it makes both in silent mode and as standard.
