Google is one of the largest technology companies and has built its success on successful products, such as the search engine, its messaging service or Adsense, its online advertising platform.. But there are other products that have also helped position it as a reference among individuals. It is the ecosystem, widely used in countries like Europe thanks to the success of Android, which allows Google to have a comfortable position.
Google Photos is one of the best. It was touted as the ultimate storage tool, with unlimited hosting, although that changed a few years later. Google jumped on the subscription bandwagon and with Google One forced those who needed more than the 15GB offered free on each account to pay.
This is why some users have started to consider making backup copies in another way. However, There is a way to free up storage space by compressing photos and videos which for some reason were uploaded in full size. In fact, when you first create a Google Photos account, the files are uploaded without compression and you have to choose this option manually if you want the free space to last longer.
The compression system Google Photos allows you to reduce the size of photos and videos, but in exchange it compresses them.. Concretely, it leaves the photos at 16 Mpx, while the videos are resized to 1080p. This is especially important if we usually save files with a higher resolution, since those with this resolution or a lower resolution are not resized. Yes, they are compressed to take up less space, but the difference is so small that it is always worth it.
To free up space, you need to open the Google Photos website on a computer. In the Side menuthe one with the three horizontal stripes, we select Storage. In category Reclaim space we will click on More information next to the text “Convert photos and videos to storage-saving quality” and then click Compress available photos and videos.
It takes a few minutes to complete this action and It must be taken into account that it cannot be cancelled.. After some time, we will see how the free space has increased. The download percentage depends on the number of uncompressed images we have and the large format videos we have stored.
Once this is done, you need to make sure that all the photos and videos downloaded are in a compressed way. To do this, we open the application on the mobile and click on the Avatar from the upper right corner. Then we click on Google Photos Settings and then in Backup copy. This is where, under Backup Quality, you need to choose storage savings.
