The universal charger is closer than ever

charger, closer, universal

In mid-January, we learned that the European Union is in the process of voting to ask its parliamentarians to give their opinion on building a single telephone charger.

One charger will arrive before the summer: EU is impatient

What was needed was to reduce the number of different cables that were available, although after the initial request from European authorities a few years ago we basically got three: microUSB, USB-C and Lightning.

The law is allowed

As it may seem, the European Parliament no longer obliges manufacturers to use one-way communication. The vote sought approval and asked the European Commission to apply the rules in this regard. That is, they were voting to know if there was interest on the part of the member states that made up those laws. And the victory was overwhelming, with 582 votes in favor, 40 for fight and 37 for dismissal.

Therefore, the administration has designated the month of July 2020 as the last time that the Commission would draft a legal entity, which will be returned for a vote.

The directive considers that the decision taken is reviewed in the future to align the charger across technological advancements, so that progress can be made on the use of new connectors, but with the whole industry moving at the same time.

The universal charger is the first step

USB-C adapters for your mobile device: excellent options

Although July is forced by products to use a single connector (which will be USB C), it is thought that some time will be given to enable the industry to adapt to the new reality.

But by then, which will be a few months, the European Parliament should move on, forcing companies to use only one charging connector not only on their phones, but on major electronic devices, such as laptops, tablets, speakers, etc.

Potentially, larger ones may not work, such as televisions, but if all smaller machines use the same connector, the cost of charging materials and the use of materials and equipment will be much lower. Even so, this is exactly what the European Parliament wants.
