Over the past few weeks, I’ve seen firsthand the divide between techies and the mainstream. During the Xiaomi 12T series presentation trip, I realized that several colleagues from other media were carrying the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 as their own mobile. It wouldn’t have been eye-catching if it hadn’t been the only place I’ve seen this model outside of stores.
However, the Galaxy Z Flip I’ve seen on occasion, both in real life and in series.
It is clear that what people appreciate the most in foldables is the possibility of using it as a normal mobile and, in addition, of carrying it comfortably in your bag or your pants.
Size gets awkward
Last week, I reviewed the Pixel 7 and the Pixel 7 Pro, and one of the things that caught my attention the most was the difference in weight and size. Although the Pixel 7 Pro camera is better and more versatile, the difference in weight and size would make me hesitate if I were to buy either phone for my personal use.
This is something I experienced with other models as well, but the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 solved it for me almost without warning. In fact, speaking recently with my colleague Manuel Ramírez, he told me something similar, that the Flip 4 was very comfortable and that more than once he had tried to fold a mobile that does not fold. Professional risks.
If that’s something that happens to those of us who dedicate ourselves to it, I can’t imagine what it might mean for someone who isn’t looking to have the highest specs, just a compliant mobile to everything and also comfortable.
Let’s not ignore the design
Another element often overlooked by analysts is the relevance of the design. There are many people who buy a car, a cell phone or a refrigerator because of its appearance, and not because of the technology inside.
This is something key and, in the world of mobiles, mobiles are the ones that stand out the most. It’s true that they may not be the prettiest (it’s a matter of taste), but of course they are the ones that attract the most attention.
We hope that soon brands like Motorola, OPPO or Xiaomi will launch new foldables in Europe, although the current economic situation does not invite it.
