It’s been a week since the Apple event where we saw it, but the dynamic island of the iPhone 14 Pro is still on everyone’s lips for being one of the best ideas we’ve seen from designers. Apple for a long time. And it looks like what we’ve seen is just the beginning.
A hole in the screen can also be used to play
Developer Kriss Smolka (you’ll know him if I tell you he’s the creator of Waterminder) posted an example on Twitter of how Dynamic Island can be leveraged to go beyond a smart interface and build games around it:
Who has an iPhone 14 Pro right now? Need to test this on device ASAP!

What Kriss has done is develop a kind of “Pong” where you pass a ball with this dynamic island, which in turn reacts every time it hits that ball. Yes, it’s simple, but it shows that you can create a whole game around what is initially an obstacle on the iPhone 14 Pro screen.
This also gives another data: Apple allows developers to do this with its API.. It won’t be one of those parts of the system that is heavily guarded, and it could trigger more creativity exercises like this. Dynamic Island can be a temporary thing that only lasts a few years (like the notchwithout going any further), but it can leave very interesting traces.
