Apple is finally ready to include the technology that would make Touch ID possible under the iPhone’s screen thanks to a new patent granted
Those from Cupertino are winners of a new patent related to a form of technology associated with fingerprints using acoustic images. This opens up the possibility that very soon, iPhones and Apple Watches could allow unlocking via the fingerprint on the screen. The specific patent explains how acoustic imaging systems can be exploited to capture the same images but fingerprints users. The technology is similar to that used in the iPad Air except that the Touch ID is located on one edge of the chassis.
Touch ID could return very soon, now integrated into the screen thanks to a new patent
The acoustic imaging system, as Patently Apple explains, includes a range of “acoustic transducers”. These transducers exploiting “beamforming techniques” to concentrate “acoustic energy production” from each set of transducers” to a part of the surface that defines the imaging system itself.
In the figures presented in the patent, we can see an electronic device, which can be an iPhone, in which This system is seen through a thin film and part of the surface is shown. In a second figure, the same image is shown but the system is placed on the side of the case, as is the case today on the iPad Air.
In another figure, the same device is displayed with the acoustic imaging system but on the other side of the same housing.. In smaller numbers, what could be an Apple Watch is reflected and the same type of system but deployed in different parts of the device: on the screen, on the digital crown and even on the bracelet itself.
Google has already made progress with ultrasonic fingerprint technology
In recent days we have been telling you about the Google Pixel and the subtle way they are making fun of Apple’s iPhone, both in an advertising campaign and even at their events. The reality is that the Pixel 9 includes an advanced ultrasonic fingerprint technology that has surprised.
As our colleagues at Andro4all tell us, the Pixels historically do not have the best fingerprint sensor. Pixel 9 has 50% faster fingerprint sensor, Mountain View says than their brothers from past generations. Indeed, Qualcomm’s 3D Sonic Gen 2 was included.
Interestingly, this new sensor is also present in Samsung’s Galaxy S devices.. This is an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor, very similar to the patent obtained by Apple. We assume that Those from Cupertino will try to explain what the differences are between theirs and Qualcomm’s.
Regarding the issue of patents, we are waiting, because they generally do not all see the light of day, although with this particular patent we can be sure that Apple wants to bring Touch ID to the iPhone on your screen in future generations.
